Verizon Wireless, one of the big four wireless providers in the US, recently announced plans to charge customers a $30 upgrade fee, never mind that they are currently eligible to upgrade under the terms of their contract. This would mean that Verizon is the last to do so among the big four – where the other three are Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T, in no particular order. AT&T first doubled their upgrade fee to $36 in February, and this came about after Sprint also doubled the upgrade fee to $36 in 2011. As for T-Mobile, they are kinder on our wallets with an $18 fee, although we could very well see a revision in due time.

According to Verizon Wireless, “this fee will help us continue to provide customers with the level of service and support they have come to expect which includes Wireless Workshops, online educational tools, and consultations with experts who provide advice and guidance on devices that are more sophisticated than ever.” I sure hope that they will keep to their word, and did Verizon just follow suit in order to earn more dough?
