Nikkei reported that Amazon was working on selling prepaid 500MB SIM cards in Japan earlier this week, and it is said that those cards are now available on Amazon Japan for 1980 yen each month – which roughly translates to approximately $25 a pop. It seems that future customers will need to make an initial ‘SIM package’ purchase of 3,150 yen, and the moment you are done with your 500MB of storage space, you can pick up another 500MB of storage space for 1,980 yen using a credit card, which would equal to approximately $50 each month.

Whatever data that is not used each month, it will not be rolled over to the following month, which is not that great to the consumer at all. Definitely far from the pay-per-use model that we are used to, don’t you think so? Officially known as a B-Mobile 4G/LTE card (which is available as a standard SIM and as a micro SIM), it will be LTE enabled, relying on DoCoMo’s network. B-Mobile says that the card will be used just for data, and it does not support voice calls, SMS, or MMS. Nikkei did mention that these cards are able be able to play nice in Docomo’s mobile devices, apart from being compatible with foreign smartphones such as the iPhone.
