They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but would you really want someone to imitate your hard work, and then make a profit from it simply by offering most of what you can at a far lower price, not to mention they do not need to go through the painful and long hours of research and development? That might be on one end of the extreme, but Dodocase, a company that has come up with iPad covers in the past, is now back in action by offering an unofficial Cardboard kit for just $19.95 a pop.
Of course, this unofficial Cardboard kit will require you to top up another $5 in order to make use of the NFC tag, while some assembly is required. This does share a very close resemblance with that of the original, official Cardboard kit from the folks over at Google, which might just usher in a whole new world of VR applications and games. After all, when some parts of the required hardware are relatively cheap, it ought to do its bit to let more folks feel comfortable about jumping aboard the bandwagon.
I personally don’t see anything wrong with this unofficial Cardboard kit – sure, it might not be from Google directly, but if it works, why not?
