verizon-logo-stone-wallWhile most carriers have done away with unlimited data plans, there are still many users out there who are on grandfathered plans, meaning that their carrier is honoring their earlier contract with the customer, even though the service/feature is no longer offered. That being said, if you’re thinking about abusing your data, think again.

Verizon has recently confirmed to the folks at Droid-Life that starting this October, users will see a reduction in their internet speeds if they fall under the carrier’s top five percentage of heavy internet users. This means that if you were to consume more than 4.7GB of data a month, you would see your speeds reduced until the next billing cycle.

According to Verizon, this is part of their “Network Optimization” which we guess means that in order to allow everyone to experience relatively same speeds, they will try to cap the speeds of those who might be using too much of it. This applies to Verizon’s unlimited 4G LTE data plan which is pretty fast as it is, so it’s not surprising that many would take advantage of its speed and unlimited data to do a lot of downloading, watching movies, streaming music, and so on.

If you’re not a particularly heavy user then we guess this shouldn’t be an issue, but if you are, then it’s definitely something worth taking into consideration.
