steam music playerWhile gamers could always listen to music on their computers while playing their video games, controlling it was a bit tricky unless you had dedicated media keys on your keyboard, so if you wanted to change songs, pause, play, skip a track, and etc., you’d have to minimize your game and go to your media player to do it.

Well the good news is that if you’re an avid user of Steam, you will be pleased to learn that the Steam Music Player is now available to gamers who have the Steam client installed on their computers. The feature was announced earlier this year as a beta but it has since exited beta and is available to the masses.

Basically the feature allows gamers to enjoy their music while playing games. It has playlist support and gamers will also be able to control their music in-game through the Steam overlay. It will be compatible with the MP3 format and files as long as it is on your hard drive, but if you’re exclusively a streamer of music, we guess this doesn’t apply to you.

To celebrate the launch of the feature, Steam is offering a 75% to a handful of soundtracks for some of their video game titles, such as Half-Life, Half-Life Two, Portal, and Portal 2. In addition there is a Music section under Library in which it will show game soundtracks for your installed games when available.
