cancerWhile our smartphones aren’t exactly medical devices, from time to time they can surprise us in unexpected ways. Last year a woman who recorded a video selfie led to an early diagnosis of a ministroke, where thankfully its early detection led to her making a full recovery. Pretty amazing, huh?

What’s even more amazing is that recently, a mother from Rockford, Illinois managed to save the life of her 2-year old son through a cellphone recording. Basically the camera revealed some unusual spots in her son’s eye and both her and her husband felt that something was amiss. She then typed in her son’s symptoms online and discovered that the spots in the eye was a symptom of a much larger problem.

It turns out that her son had a rare form of cancer known as retinoblastoma and basically 75% of the eye was covered in tumors. Unfortunately the entire eye had to be removed but we suppose that’s a small price to pay otherwise the cancer would have spread to his blood and eventually to his brain.

According to Julie Fitzgerald who spoke to WREX-TV, “I did not want to take the picture because I had this dreaded feeling in the pit of my stomach, and I took the picture and boom, his whole pupil was just white and that’s when I knew.” Her 2-year old has since gotten a prosthetic eye and doctors believe that all the cancer has since been removed.
