freevoltLooking to keep something powered? You’d need an energy source, like a battery. However batteries will eventually deplete meaning that you will have to charge it again. That’s not a problem usually but what if you wanted something that would stay on perpetually? We suppose there are alternatives like solar, but what about harnessing the air around us?

No, we’re not talking about windmills or kinetic energy. Instead a company by the name of Drayson Technologies has come up with a clever little device called the Freevolt that has the ability to harness energy from stray radio frequency signals. Given how readily available RF signals are in urban areas, by harnessing these signals, it could use that energy to keep things powered without having to create new energy.

Like we said RF signals are easily found in urban areas, thanks to our phones, WiFi, TVs, and so on. With the Freevolt, Drayson is able to take advantage of these RF signals and keep things powered on. However it isn’t able to generate a ton of electricity, so don’t expect it to keep your lights or computers on, at least not for now.

Some examples that Drayson has thought of include motion-activated cameras, smoke alarms, wearable technology, or beacons, all of which might not necessarily require the most power. Drayson’s Freevolt technology won’t be directly available to consumers, but the company is aiming at selling licenses to use its technology and patents.
