Most major publications lock their content behind paywalls, there’s nothing wrong in that, it’s just their way of adapting to a decline in paper subscriptions and a greater shift towards online consumption of news. However, some people may not want to purchase expensive subscriptions if they are only interested in reading specific stories, and perhaps they might appreciate a service that allows them to pay a few cents per paywalled story, and, as they say, there’s an app for that.

Pay-per-story Blendle is bringing its news aggregation service to the United States in beta. It enables users to read individual stories from major publications like the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and Economist by allowing them to pay-per-story. Prices start at about 9 cents a story.

If you’re interested in the service you will have to sign up for a waiting list and then wait to be provided access which might take a while. It remains to be seen though whether this service works well in the United States. Blendle’s early partners like New York Times and Bloomberg either have free or limited access while the business crowd usually just pays for the entire subscription to scribes like WSJ.

Blendle can appeal more to average users who would like access to those articles without having to pay more for a subscription. That may very well work because many of the best stories are locked behind a paywall and if that gets people paying for content, I’m sure the papers won’t mind.
