Albert Einstein is without a doubt one of the biggest theoretical physicists there has ever lived. His work on the general theory of relativity continues to make its mark on science even to this day, decades after he passed away in 1955. You may not be able to meet him but if you happened to have $150,000 lying around you might have been able to acquire an article of clothing that the great scientist spent a considerable amount of time with.

Auction house Christie’s has auctioned what it describes as a “rather pungent” Levi Strauss leather jacket that belonged to Albert Einstein, that’s just a fancy way of saying that he wore this jacket a lot and it smells really bad.

Einstein is believed to have purchased this jacket during the mid-1930s when he came over to America from Germany. It’s said that he wore this jacket almost all the time.

Fellow scientist Leopold Infeld, who worked with Einstein at Princeton, mentioned in his memoirs Einstein wanted to keep material restrictions to the bare minimum, he let his hair grow so as to not make repeated visits to a barber, and that “one leather jacket solved the coat problem for years.” This is that leather jacket.

Someone bought the jacket at the auction today for $144,424. It’s unclear where it’s headed, whether a museum picked it up or if it’s going to be the part of the private collection of a very wealthy individual.
