Amazon has opened up quite a few physical bookstores across the United States and it previously used to offer the same discounted prices to all customers but that no longer appears to be the case. The company has reportedly started charging customers who don’t subscribe to its Prime membership program more than those who do. Prime members can still buy books from physical stores at the prices that they see on Amazon online.
According to the report, non-Prime members are now being made to pay list price for books purchased through Amazon’s physical bookstores located in several cities across the U.S. This change is actually said to have been in effect since August this year.
Non-Prime members are certainly not going to like this but it’s not like there aren’t other stores that first require customers to have a membership before they can get discounted items. Barnes & Noble has one such program and so does CostCo.
This means that Prime members now have an additional incentive to pay monthly or yearly for Amazon’s membership service, they will retain the ability to get discounted books from Amazon’s physical bookstores. The company is planning to expand these stores to major cities like New York and Chicago as well.
