HMD Global confirmed last year that all Android-powered Nokia smartphones will be upgraded to Android Oreo. It didn’t confirm whether the Nokia 2 would receive the update when the handset came out and many assumed that this device may not be on that list. However, the company has now confirmed that the Nokia 2 will receive the Android 8.1 update with some Android Go enhancements.

The $99 Nokia 2 was launched by the company in October last year. The entry-level device runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box and the company has now confirmed that it will eventually be upgraded to Oreo as well.

HMD’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas confirmed via Twitter that the Nokia 2 is going to receive Android 8.1 Oreo with Android Go’s memory management improvements.

For those who are unaware, Android Go was introduced by Google at its developers’ conference last year. It’s a modified iteration of Android which is meant for low-end devices with 1GB of RAM or less. Google won’t just optimize the operating system on these devices.

Many of its first-party apps will receive a separate Go version for these devices. Even the Play Store on these devices will prioritize apps that are optimized for low-end devices. This is how Google will bring Android to the masses.

While Sarvikas confirmed that the Nokia 2 will receive the Android 8.1 Oreo update, he hasn’t provided a timeframe as yet, so it’s unclear at this point in time when Nokia 2 owners will finally get a taste of Oreo.
