Rumor: iPhone 2 for MacWorld 2008?
Posted on: October 12, 2007

People just can’t get enough iPhone rumors. Here’s the most recent one: according to smartoffice, Apple is planning an iPhone 2 for MacWorld in San Francisco. It is said that Apple is already talking to manufacturers and contractors about major hardware and software changes/upgrades aimed at non-US markets.
So here’s what we think of this:
1/ Steve jobs confirmed that iPhone 2 was in the works, but that’s like saying “we’ll do something better next time”. Not helpful.
2/ Macworld SF: This seems early to announce an iPhone 2, but “non-US markets” and “major hardware changes” might point to a CDMA device that would work in Japan and on Sprint and Verizon networks. A CDMA iPhone for January would make more sense, schedule-wise.
3/ Tthe iPhone 2 will have a GPS. GPS chips are getting so… cheap that you can find some in computer mice! The widescreen makes the device a great candidate for GPS apps. At least, they migh not get maps from Telenav, which just got bought by Nokia
4/ wireless Email sync would be very nice, but I’m dubious that Apple will support Exchange and BlackBerry Connect, although I hope that they will.
5/ “Apple is already talking to manufacturers and contractors”: well, yes that would be normal, that’s part of the overall planning, but it doesn’t mean that the iPhone 2 release is imminent.

you are kind of dumb the reason they come out with newer versions is to improve on the phone, so obviously it is better.....the new one will be 3g compatible which means it could receive faster internet speeds.

IF APPLE IPHONE WANTS BUSINESS SUCCESS IN THE PHILIPPINES AND ELSEWHERE, HERES WHAT THEY SHOULD DO:
1. MAKE THEIR PHONES FREE TO WORK ON BOTH NETWORKS
2. TXTING IS A VERY USEFUL TOOL FOR PEOPLE WHO CANT AFFORD.
3. THERE SOURCE OF JOY IS IN MAKING VIDEO OF THERE LOVE ONES, DEAD OR ALIVE.
4. FOR THEIR SIBLINGS IN SCHOOL THEY WANT A HANDY COMPUTER IN A PHONE.
5.THEY LIKE FINE MUSIC
6.THEY HATE CONTRACTS, IT COSTS MONEY THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SPENT FOR RICE AND FISH.
BETTER THE APPLE CEO DEAL W/ RICE AND FISH THEY'LL SURELY MAKE MONEY? NOT WITH THOSE PHONES THAT ROBS.

I am excited about the new iphone coming out, but I think i'd prefer the old one over the new one.
It's a great idea do update the iphone, But I don't think they need to make a totally new one.
The iphone's purpose was to be the ultimate phone and the best phone, and you are trying to make another version? I just don't think it would be good.

without a doubt the iphone will never come out for verizon, or any other carrier, other than att, its exclusive to att only.

By Just Visiting , 01/05/08 3:28 AM (CommentID #659648)
Yes they certainly can. Because the contract with AT&T is just for certain model, the first generation 2.5G iPhone, so it doesn't include future versions, cause they are actually new products.

By Ron , 25/04/08 5:28 PM (CommentID #652033)
The REAL suckers are people that pick the free phone, so they sign a 2 year contract for a phone that breaks within 6 months. They are MADE to break well within the contract time. Now they have to pay big money to get the phone fixed, or pay full price for a new phone, because they're not up for the free upgrade yet. I don't completely understand the reasoning for expecting a good quality free phone either. What, because you pay monthly for the service? Do you also expect a free TV because you pay your cable provider every month? The way to go, is to pay a little more for a good phone that will last you beyond the contract time, and if necessary, buy the extended warranty.
By Bill - The Nice Guy , 25/04/08 9:05 AM (CommentID #651504)
Wow... Anger is not the way to a fulfilling life, young grasshopper. Be not envious of those who take the route of the iPhone. Instead, be happy for them... for they are the other side of the masses - the side that help to balance the market! They pay for quality, while you refuse to pay - so instead, receive a lack thereof. Either way, no one is wrong. We are all just different - and that's okay, my young, inexperienced friend!!!
By Jonathan , 23/04/08 4:34 AM (CommentID #647696)
Why does everyone get so angry at each other in these posts? I like reading the rumours, but none of them should be taken so seriously, apple has a very good track record of keeping things very well hidden until they themselves announce the products they will be selling you. iPhone isn't for everyone, it has a far greater success in the US than Europe because europeans aren't used to paying for their mobile phones and they've had 3g for a few years now and 2g devices are a big leap backwards in terms of speed and reliability. Whatever iphone apple next releases will be great and a huge improvement on their current model, but this speculation will do nothing but boost awareness of the iphone, only apple know whats coming up.

I love this phone, however it needs some tweaking...a camera with no video? What? I can't send pics in a text? What? I can only type sideways in Safari? Why? Visual Voicemail is cool though. They should add these features and the software should be able to be downloaded to current iphone holders FOR FREE!!!!!!!!

Please don't try to pretend you know what you're talking about. If you worked for Apple you wouldn't be exposing information that could put you out of a job. It's not just an "oh well" situation. Please go waste someone else's time.

No one can tell you anything. The reason why apple went with ATT was because ATT gave them the freedom to do what they've done with certain aspects, i.e. visual voicemail. No one will/can tell you anything

Undoubtably the next iphone will have gps but as you can see from the latest version of google maps (which is what the current iphone runs) theres gps support built in from the getgo - no reason at all for apple/at&t to buy software from its now rival nokia..

By Akolberg , 11/03/08 12:43 PM (CommentID #549672)
AT&T may be the biggest. I'm not sure but, you still need competition to keep technology moving. If they get too big then the service will decline and the prices will go up. I love Apple products but, I will probably never get an iphone because of their limited mindset on competitive carriers. They would have probably sold a lot more phones. I know I would have bought one if it were available on Verizon.

anyway, the next generatoin iphone is going to hav a high def camera with zoom, multimedia messaging, GPS, and soooooooooo much more cool stuff, so wait for the iphone 270(name has something to do with camera)
By MOIL , 08/03/08 8:54 PM (CommentID #543393)
If they added a better camera, video recorder, flash, and instant message it would be an almost perfect phone. for Mac I think this is kinda of a let down to introduce an edgy piece of technology that (mostly) just looks cool. i do like my iphone but they should have tweaked it just a bit more.

The Iphone 2 is going to be called the Iphone 270... it is supposed to have 2 cameras... one in front one in the back... It has live video share with both cameras... in other words you could lift it in the air and they will see pretty much the entire surroundings of you... given the name 270... It is also going to be displayed as one picture rather than 2 seperate pictures... Well... hope that gives you guys some update about the Iphone =)

Yeah, those folks at the local Apple store are real likely to have top-secret info concerning unannounced products. You know that less than 50 Apple employees knew about the iPhone prior to its announcement, right?
By PadreLove , 08/02/08 12:38 PM (CommentID #472435)
I just left a verizon store where I was going to get a blackberry. I asked about the iPhone coming to Verizon and the lady who worked there leaned across the desk and said "rumor has it the new iPhone will be sold through Apple stores and CAN be activated on Verizon" Have you guys heard anything about that? She said it wont happen for a couple months (if it happens) so I can wait that long, but dont know if anyone has heard anything like this. I asked about iPhones contract with AT&T and she said that is for selling the phone. Verizon wouldnt be able to sell it, but you can buy in through Apple and Verizon will be able to activate. Thoughts??

Lol, I'm cracking up over this notion that cdma is going to be "dead in 3 years." Gsm-freaks have been saying this for years, lol. It's criminal how these lies are propagated as fact. Fact is, Vodafone, one of the largest and most successful carriers outside of the US, was very impressed with Verizon's cdma-3g network. And the development of the 4g network (yes, it's NOT just a gsm perk) for. Vodafone is impressed enough to potentially impliment wide-spread cdma-conversions over their networks to replace gsm. The LTE (long term evo) is in relation to CDMA-based phones for Verizon, NOT gsm. It'll give devices from Alltel, Sprint, or any other cdma carrier to be transferable. So no, Verizon is not switching to GSM now...or ever. :)

Verizon's network is horrible. I have an Iphone and the reception at my house is great. With my verizon, I wasn't even getting one bar in my house and half the time even in Chicago it was pretty lousy...and no, it wasn't my phone. I had switched out the very same phone several times only to find the same results in its replacements
By anonymous , 12/01/08 7:13 PM (CommentID #427704)
How about apple get their stupid Safari browser on the Iphone to support Flash, what 30% of the websites out there are using. I love going to websites on this browser and not being able to see fully functional websites because they decide because of competition not to allow a simple plugin that is mainstream these days. Is that going to be the case for Apple with Silverlight? Common Apple, wise up. You are not going to dominate all markets forever so you should be making your browser a little bit realistic and user friendly and more useful at this stage.

There are so many silly comments on this page!
[1.] AT&T is NOT the world's largest carrier in the world, its typical that Americans think they are the centre of the world!
[2.] Apple has not got a reputation of updating products soon after they are released - the iPhone is not available in almost every country in the world - they will focus on rolling the product internationally before they update.
[3.] Of course they are working on the new version of the iPhone BUT this does not meant that the process takes weeks. Saying 'A new version of the iPhone will be released' is like saying that fruits go bad.
[4.] 3G is not the only medium to use data services, the focus has been on the utilisation of WI-FI (with the inclusion of full WI-FI support and the WI-FI iTunes Music Store) the future is not only in 3G this has just become a 'hype word' and people say it without actually knowing about technology!
[5.] Most of the national carriers do not offer realistic 3G support and there are many other technologies that are far more compatible and well served. What is the point in a 3G phone that doesn't work in 95% of your country?
EDGE and GPRS is well served throughout Europe and the US 3G is not.
3G networks in Asia do not use the same phones as the western world so if the iPhone was going to follow conventions they would not be released in ASIA - just like 99% of other phones.
[6.] Google Maps are very advanced - with the new firmware upgrades MyLocation is more useful than GPS in most circumstances and additional peripherals could easily offer GPS.
iPod's do not offer FM radio.
[7.] Apple will not offer any real updates until this first version has been exposed to the international market. The time-scale for this will reach forward past summer 2008.
[8.] Within the next 6 months a higher capacity iPhone will be offered and 3rd party products and services will take the iPhone to a reality that no one could have predicted

i agree but the reason i do agree is all about the crappy camera i mean who makes a super cool phone and puts a 1.6 megapixal camera and no video recording functions and if you compared it between the nokia n95 on its gps signal the nokia is far better so ithink that if apple keeped in a little longer the could inhancened it hopefully the iphone two will be better but dont put hearts on it going to be better than any nokia phone,

apple has a fixed contract with AT&T in the states ONLY therefore applemay release a new iPhone on any carrier it wishes out of the states however apple would likely stick with AT&T because it is one of the largest carriers on the planet and gives them huge amounts just to have excluisivty of the phone. If you are not wanting to buy an iphone with a contract then france is a good option because the iphone is both contract and pay as you go on orange. Gps support for iphone is confirmed and is in the form of an external adapter to be retailed this year. iPhone 2 is likely but probably not until June at the earliest but we can expect more rumors and info over the next months. All i can really say is enjoy the iphone and dont be to botherd about wasting your money afterall im sure you would be able to use your contract on the new device anyway. If its the same carrier

Iphone does work on pay as you go and it really isn't that much more.
The IPHONE would be perfect if it had GPS and a better camera with more operations including video. Colors would be OK, but I get a case anyway to protect it. Other than that IPHONE is perfect.

Apple and AT&T have an exclusive deal for at least 5 years, and no, that includes any version of the iPhone to come out. No telcom would be dumb enough to sign a contract on a device that will age 5 years, and Apple benefits nicely from the exclusive deal - they make a 10-20% royalty on monthly revenue, something that they would most definitely not be getting if they violated contract with AT&T.
By Bob , 05/01/08 10:48 AM (CommentID #418285)

If you don't like AT&T don't get the IPhone. It's that simple. If you don't want the latest and greatest phones, don't get AT&T. CDMA will be dead in 3 years. 4G is coming and it is in a GSM form. That is why 80% of the world uses GSM. Verizon has announced that they will transition to LTE (long term evolution) which is GSM based. Voice and data at the same time is the wave of the future, CDMA cannot support it. And Yes, AT&T has and will continue to make exclusive deals with manufacturers to carry the latest and greatest. That is the strength of being the biggest telecom company in the world.

you know it would be funny if they released a cdma version for japan and then the americans had to black market them in and hack them on to sprint.

If they release a new iphone that isn't the previous model they can sell it through whoever they choose cause the next-gen phone isn't under contract.

To BigPantsMalone:problem is that iphone was outdated on a first day of selling.it was one year behind competitors,at least in europe.

Multimedia messaging, better signal capabilities compared to blackberry devices, also the contract is between AT&T and Apple for the Iphone, i'm sure it's exclusively the Iphone alone... knowing that if they develop and release a second version that they can offer it to any vendor they wish without breaching their previous contract with AT&T.

when is apple going to realize that people want to type on the iphone sideways? this is so annoying. you can type sideways on the safari browser but not on texting, the world's most popular cell phone use? wow.

If At&t can hit a certain quota on selling the iPhones over the first two years of the contract, Apple will sign another contract with At&t. Verizon, Sprint, and T-mobile may never sell an iPhone.

JBOMB,
As far as i know it's a 2 year exclusive contract with AT&T, at least at the time of the key note it was.
You all need to stop complaining about buying a brand new peice of technology and haveing it be outdated in six months. That is where we are with technology, computers are outdated the month after you buy them, cell phones come out almost daily and even car companies are trying to one up each other everychance they get. A new IPhone is immenant and you'll have to get over that if you want the latest and greatest.
I didn't get the first IPhone and trust i would kill for one if it was on the Verizon netwrok but I refuse to give up the great service I have for a first generation phone (I made that mistake with the original razr phone). If you want this potential IPhone on another netwrok then resist buying the AT&T version and let Apple and Steve Jobs know that your doing it. I'm sure that he has some way out of the AT&T contract and releasing a new phone may be it.

They should put the phone on pay as you go instead of contract. It way to dear for the phone and the contract.Get a video camera in it and zoom and gps and 3g.There is a big improvement needed for the next iphone. Not bad for apple first attempt at it it can only get better from here on

why can't you use iphone on corporate accounts? (businss plans). I bought one and wasn't able to activate it. Any news on a fix for this problem as the majority of ipones sold are to business people.
