Keyboard illumination mod for netbooks

If there’s one feature that netbooks truly lack against regular (select) notebooks, it would be the backlit keyboard. This nifty addition to notebooks is one of those things in life that make you wonder, “How did I live my life without backlit keyboards before?”. Well, don’t turn your back on netbooks just because backlit keyboards are not a staple feature – why not take it upon yourself and modify your own netbook? MyDellMini user vrg3 took that route by opening up his Dell Mini 9 netbook, throwing in a LED into the bezel within close proximity of the webcam. Following some wiring wizardry, this LED can now be controlled through the Ctrl key. Fancy taking the plunge yourself? The final effect is definitely nowhere near that of an actual backlit keyboard, but resembles more of pointing a dim flashlight on those keys. Still, it is the effort that counts, right? May be not: we tried this on another laptop and the blinding-bright LED light just at the top of the display is just a bad idea.
