Canadian iPhone 4 Gets iPad Sharing Data Option

Canadian users will be the envy of many American iOS consumers as the Canadian iPhone 4 will get a 6 GB iPhone plan from wireless carrier Rogers–compared to the $25 2 GB on AT&T–as well as an option for iPad sharing. That’s right, you can share you iPhone’s data plan, something you haven’t been able to do, with a WiFi-only iPad for only $20 more a month, which is inline with AT&T’s tethering plan though the US carrier doesn’t offer a means to tether your iPhone to the iPad.

It’s unclear if Apple has updated its Bluetooth protocols quietly to enable Bluetooth DUN on the iPad to tap into the iPhone 4’s Bluetooth sharing, or if Cupertino, California is working with more progressive carriers about bringing WiFi tethering. Tethering thus far has been either restricted to USB or Bluetooth tethering and the limited Bluetooth profiles on the iPad does not allow the larger tablet to connect to its smaller iPhone’s data plan.

Here’s what Rogers has to say about tethering:

*New* smartphone and iPad sharing plans You’ve told us you love our in-market iPad plans and the ease of activation on Rogers – but some of you have asked for device sharing and we’ve listened. Starting July 30, and for a limited time until Sept. 30, customers on a 6 GB plan will be able to share data between iPhones and iPads for an extra $20 (plus Government Regulatory Recovery Fee).
