It seems that there is no end to the obsession with megapixels when it comes to digital devices and now Japanese chip maker Renesas is promising 16-megapixel sensors for future phones. The company claims its latest image-processing system chip, the CE150, is capable enough to create 16-megapixel phone cameras for the first time, a nice bump from the 13-megapixel sensors that are currently available. The company claims that the new chip paves the way for five times faster continuous shots too, not to mention the ability to shoot full HD videos. The chip is slated to be mass-produced as early as March and the company is planning to churn out 1 million units monthly. Sample units of this chip are already available for $48 apiece.
