Don’t you just love free stuff? Of course, there is the saying that goes, “there is no free lunch in this world”, but sometimes, you get an exception to the rule – and we have heard that City of Heroes Freedom will be made available for free sometime later this year. The game itself has been rebranded as that, and intends to “redefine City of Heroes based on the cornerstones of content, rewards and choice.”

Just like how Champions Online operates at the moment, current subscribers to the game will end up getting a status upgrade of sorts to “VIP members”, where they are able to gain full access to all game content in addition to a monthly stipend of “Paragon Points” which can be spent on microtransactions. Those microtransactions will comprise of new costumes, power sets and items that can be used to enhance gameplay.

Free to play players can achieve a level cap of 50, and will be able to create a couple of characters across all servers, instead of the dozen per server that VIP players enjoy. Free players cannot make use of the Alignment Change or Day Job system, and neither will they be able to use the excellent user-generated mission Architect system without having first purchased the ability to do so.
