The first generation of Windows Phone-powered smartphones do come with impressive build quality, but they haven’t really caught on with the rest of the crowd, as the iOS and Android-powered “power couple” are far ahead of everyone else when it comes to dominating the market. Microsoft head honcho Steve Ballmer won’t be throwing in the towel for their latest mobile operating system, touting that the second generation of Windows Phone devices ought to arrive sometime during Christmas this year.

Ballmer spoke at the Microsoft-sponsored Imagine Cup, saying, “Windows Phone. You know, a year ago we didn’t have a phone in the market. Now, we’re charging forward with Nokia. We have the second generation of our phones coming out this Christmas, and people are starting to do things they had never imagined before. I love the applications that I saw for the Windows Phone from the people in this room, and the way you’re pushing that device, and using that device. It was really exciting for me.”

Well, Christmas might be less than half a year away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start saving up right now for your Windows Phone handset then, right?
