If you are one the iOS users who always thought that the Face Unlock feature on Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich was pretty cool, you can stop secretly harboring that admiration. An iOS developer named Robert Neagu has managed to come up with a similar experience with a new app called FaceVault. After months of struggling to get it approved by Apple, It is now available for download from the App Store. The app does not require the device to be jailbroken and will cost you $0.99.

In a glaring similarity to Android’s Face Unlock feature, FaceVault also has the backup system in case the device does not properly recognize you, which uses a pattern unlock as well. The official notes that come with the app states however that someone who looks similar to you may be able to unlock the phone. Some users have pointed out that in comparison to the feature integrated in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, this one takes a little longer to scan the user’s face.

Given that this app is not part of the OS that would be inevitable but perhaps it can be improved upon in the future. It would be a pretty cool feature to boast to your friends about though. If you want to have a look at the app, you can watch the short demo video posted above for your convenience. For $0.99, you can click here to purchase FaceVault to have a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich on your iOS device.
