pripAt the beginning of this month, we brought you word that Sprint’s iDEN network has shut down for good, so subscribers who were riding on it have to settle for something else. Having said that, push-to-talk (PTT) technology is not quite dead and buried just yet, as Motorola has just launched PRIP, which happens to be a PTT platform which will function through the use of mobile data or Wi-Fi networks. This particular PRIP service

The PRIP service was launched in Mexico a month ago, but now those who reside on the US will also be able to take advantage of PRIP’s service thanks to an app on Google Play. The thing is, your Android-powered device will need to run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread or later, which should not be too much of an issue since most devices now run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above. Not only that, there is also an iOS version that is tipped to arrive in the weeks again. At this point in time, those who decided to sign up are able to use the service for free throughout the first month. Once the “honeymoon period”, so to speak, has passed, it will cost you $7.99 each month, which is not the cheapest form of communication, but at least you can hook up with all of the other PRIP users.
