Love survival-style games like DayZ or Rust? Well if you do, you might be interested to learn that Sony has recently announced that they are working on a zombie MMO game called H1Z1. Given that name, we can only assume that this references the H1Ni swine flu virus that was making its round a few years ago, a virus which many considered to be extremely deadly.

According to John Smedley, Sony Online Entertainment’s head, he revealed the game’s backstory on the game’s Subreddit. “The H1Z1 virus devastated mankind and left nothing but death and destruction in its wake and a world nearly empty of human life where the remnants of humanity are in a fight against extinction against those infected with the virus.”

Smedley later adds, “It’s been 15 years since H1Z1 was first encountered and what’s left of the world before is overrun with the Infected. Humanity has been reduced to hiding in the shadows, searching desperately for food and water and anything that can help to survive even for another day.”

Like we said earlier, this sounds a lot like a survival-styled game like DayZ and Rust and apparently Smedley was more than anticipated when it came to such comparisons. According to him, he claims that what will differentiate H1Z1 from the competition would be SOE’s experience from creating MMO franchises like EverQuest and PlanetSide.

He also states that the game will utilize Sony’s next-gen Forgelight engine that will be able to host thousands of gamers across multiple servers, each with their own set of rules. If you love zombies and MMOs, we reckon that H1Z1 sounds like a very promising game so if you’d like to learn more and see some H1Z1 gameplay footage, check out the video above for the details.
