new 3dsA little over a week ago, Nintendo announced that they were launching new handheld consoles in the form of the new Nintendo 3DS and the 3DS XL. In case you missed our coverage, these new consoles will still play the same games as its predecessor, with the main difference being hardware upgrades, such as a new analog c-stick.

Now the good news is that if you had your eye on Nintendo’s upcoming Super Smash Bros., you might be interested to learn that the game will be able to take advantage of the new c-sticks. This is according to a report from Joystiq who revealed the information and who also adds that the Circle Pad Pro expansion will not be supported for the game, which we have to admit is a little odd.

For gamers who might have bought the Circle Pad Pro, we guess this doesn’t sound like good news. Some are worried that this could be the start of a fragmentation of games for Nintendo’s handheld consoles because not only do the new consoles feature an analog c-stick, but Nintendo has made hardware changes as well.

Under the hood, Nintendo has given the CPU a bit of a boost. They have also increased the size of the displays and have also tossed in a pair of new shoulder buttons. Naturally newer games will want to take advantage of this, but like we said, this has led to fear of fragmentation as older consoles would obviously not be able to take advantage of the newer hardware.
