eric-schmidtWhile Google might currently be involved in all sorts of projects such as providing internet to the rest of the world, creating self-driving cars, the company does have its roots in the search engine business, and given that companies such as Yahoo were the king of search back in the day, you would think that perhaps Yahoo could be Google’s rival.

Heck, some might even consider Bing to be a potential rival to Google but according to Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt, the answer is actually Amazon. Are you surprised? Well we guess we can’t blame you if you are because Amazon seems more like an e-commerce website as opposed to a search engine.

However according to Schmidt who gave a speech in Berlin, “Many people think our main competition is Bing or Yahoo. But, really, our biggest search competitor is Amazon. People don’t think of Amazon as search, but if you are looking for something to buy, you are more often than not looking for it on Amazon. They are obviously more focused on the commerce side of the equation, but, at their roots, they are answering users’ questions and searches, just as we are.”

Schmidt also went on to state that while Google currently commands 90% of the market share in terms of online search, he is also wary that someone out there could be creating the next Google. After all if Google was able to blow past the competition like Yahoo, Lycos, Alta Vista, and so on back in the day, who’s to say that the same won’t happen to Google one day? “Someone, somewhere in a garage is gunning for us. I know, because not long ago we were in that garage. Change comes from where you least expect it.”
