If you ask someone about what social network would they use for tracking news in real-time, chances are they will say Twitter. Facebook tried to change that earlier this year. In January it introduced Trending, a new way for people to discover posts and conversations about topics that they care about, in real-time. At that time this feature was only available through desktop but that changes today. Facebook has announced that Trending is coming to mobile.

Facebook says that Trending on mobile will make it easy for people to explore stories from a variety of sources. Tapping on a topic in Trending will bring up conversations organized in up to five different sections.

The Articles section will display posts from news organizations covering that story, Live Feed will show real-time stream of reactions from Facebook users around the globe while Near the Scene will display posts from people near the location from where the story is unfolding.

In the Friends and Groups section users will see what people in their network are saying about that particular story, and In the Story will display posts from people who are a part of that story.

There will be a feed below these five sections that will continue to show relevant posts that have been ranked by timeliness, engagement and a variety of other factors. Facebook does point out that only public posts will show up in Trending, so this doesn’t make any changes to privacy settings for posts in any way.

Trending on mobile is rolling out today and will be available first to users in the U.S. for web and Android. Support for iOS and other countries of the world is “coming soon.”
