intel-hawkingThe folks over at Intel Labs has come up with a brand new tailored communications system for the noted scientist, Stephen Hawking, who recently had his life played by a certain Eddie Redmayne in the biopic Theory of Everything. This new system is known as ACAT (Assistive Context Aware Toolkit), where it was developed by a team that includes scientist Lama Nachman. The whole idea of ACAT is to assist the millions out there just like Hawking to be able to communicate in an easier manner.

Redmayne shared, “Absolutely extraordinary. It is the best possible use of technology that professor Hawking uses. These people (pointing to Intel scientists) are among the most interesting I’ve ever met.”

Intel managed to develop this particular technology with some input from Hawking, as both parties have had a longstanding relationship. How does this new Intel user interface work? Just like an engine, really, where there is a sensor that has to be mounted on Hawking’s cheek which can be detected by an infrared switch that is attached to his glasses. This would then assist Hawking to select a character on his computer, where all the relevant information will then be sent over to his speech synthesizer.
