Content consumers are increasingly going with the streaming model which is why content creators are rapidly adapting to the change. NBC is the latest company to make such a change. It will now offer a live stream for network shows, allowing viewers to access that content from wherever they might be, all they need is a good internet connect and a subscription.

The live stream service isn’t quite like CBS All Access, or the standalone streaming service that HBO is developing and hopes to launch by April 2015. Viewers will have to verify that they have a pay-TV subscription before they can access the live stream and watch NBC’s broadcast programming on desktop and mobile devices.

The service is going live today and initially it will only be available through the web. Support for mobile devices is promised and will arrive at some point early next year. In a statement, NBCUniversal said that it is “committed to supporting the TV Everywhere ecosystem.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, NBC made the decision to launch this live stream because it doesn’t want to get left behind in the internet TV market. To get audiences onboard NBCUniversal is planning to spend millions of dollars so that the ball gets rolling on this service.
