MagnifiSense-photoNormally when we think of wearable tech like wristbands, we think of health. We usually assume that these wristbands will collect biometric data about us, such as how far we’ve run, the speed we’ve run, calories burnt, heart rate, location, and so on. However the MagnifiSense is a completely different beast.

Designed by researchers at the University of Washington, MagnifiSense is actually a wearable that can collect info on the amount of power you consume from your electronic devices. As you can see from the photo, this is not the most elegant wristband but at the moment it is still a prototype.

How it works is that it comes built-in with a host of sensors. These sensors can pick up all kinds of information from your gadgets such as electric toothbrushes, lamps, laptops, and cars by “listening” to the electronic radiation they give out. Lead researcher Edward Wang states that because all electronics give off different “sounds”, it is possible to tell them apart.

One of the potential uses of the wearable is to check for devices that might be turned on by accident, like in nursing homes where attendants can come in and check to see if the stove is turned on to prevent accidents. Like we said it does seem to be a bit too chunky at the moment, but the researchers are working on slimming it down where it can make its way into a watch or a smaller wristband.
