mark-zuckerbergCongratulations to Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chen as they both have welcomed their very first child, daughter Max. In a post on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg wrote an open letter to his daughter, welcoming her into the world and also announced his intentions to eventually donate 99% of Facebook’s shares.

This will not be donated entirely at one shot, of course, and instead will be donated over the course of their lives. At this time 99% of his and his wife’s shares are said to be worth around $45 billion, so safe to say that a lot of good can be done with that money which is exactly what Zuckerberg is hoping to do.

According to Zuckerberg’s open letter, “Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today. While headlines often focus on what’s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today. We will do our part to make this happen, not only because we love you, but also because we have a moral responsibility to all children in the next generation.”

He also announced the launch of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative which aims to “advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.”
