pangu-apple-tv-jailbreak

There isn’t much activity on the jailbreak front these days as there used to be in the past, however, there’s one team based in China that continues to create and release jailbreaks for iOS devices, and the same time has now provided the first new Apple TV jailbreak. Pangu had confirmed a couple of weeks ago that it will release a jailbreak for the new Apple TV and it has now delivered on that promise.

The Pangu jailbreak team has released a jailbreak for the new Apple TV that works on tvOS 9.0 and tvOS 9.0.1. The jailbreak is meant more for developers who are looking to bring over apps and tweaks to the set-top box because an interface like Cydia is not yet available for the new Apple TV.

Nevertheless, it’s remarkable that the Pangu team has been able to create a jailbreak for the new Apple TV, something that no one else has done ever since the set-top box arrived last year. It has actually been quite a while since a jailbreak was released for any Apple TV.

Developers who want to jailbreak the fourth-generation Apple TV will need to download Pangu’s tool from its website. They will also require an Apple developer membership, a Mac, USB-C cable and Xcode.

The only caveat is that the jailbreak works with tvOS 9.0 and 9.0.1. The current version of tvOS is 9.1.1 and Apple TV automatically downloads and installs the latest software versions. Since it’s currently not possible to downgrade to a previous firmware release many may not even get the chance to test the jailbreak.
