Ever played a game of golf only to realize halfway just how thirsty or hungry you are, or maybe that you are running low on balls? Presumably most seasoned golfers would have prepared for such eventualities, but if you’re still fresh to the sport, fret not because soon you will be able to get drones to deliver such items to you thanks to Rakuten’s drone delivery service.

Now you might have heard that Rakuten does have plans to use drones for delivery, according to our report last month, but now additional details about the upcoming service have been revealed, along with Rakuten’s plans for the longer term which involves more useful services rather than catering to thirsty or hungry golfers.

For starters there will be an accompanying Android app that golfers will need to download. Customers are also expected to order a minimum of 100 yen, and the maximum weight the drone can carry is set at 2kg, so don’t expect it to bring you a feast. Rakuten is expected to trial this service starting from the 9th of May for a month, before looking to expand.

According to the company, “Rakuten is looking into the utilization of drones for deliveries in sparsely populated areas and mountainous regions, in transporting supplies during disasters and in its e-commerce businesses, including Rakuten Ichiba, and aims to accumulate technical and operational expertise through running the service and put it to use in developing further innovative drone delivery services.” In the meantime you can get an idea of how the drone will work in the video above.
