Rare items tend to fetch a lot of money. They are usually auctioned off to the highest bidder. We have often covered rare Apple computers going for outrageous prices but this is something else entirely. A rare Pokemon card, yes a card, has been auctioned for a whopping $54,970. This is the most that has ever been paid for a Pokemon card and I’m sure it’s going to hold the record for a long time.

The auction took place in Beverly Hills where this Pokemon Illustrator card was sold for almost $55,000. This card is truly one-of-a-kind as it’s unclear how many of these still exist.

A total of 39 of these illustrator cards were awarded as a prize for CoroCoro Comic illustration contests back in the late 1990s. It’s not known how many of those cards still exist and those that do are clearly very hard to come by and happen to be quite expensive.

One such Pokemon Illustrator card was sold in the early 200s for around $23,000 and the record has just now been broken, actually, the record has been smashed. $54,970 is a lot of money by any margin, significantly more than what you might spend on a Pokemon card, but ardent collectors are known to not consider money to be an object when they are adding rate items to their collection.
