facebook logoIf there is a reason why video platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are on the rise, it is not only because of the catalogue of shows they offer, but it is also because they are known for creating their own original series which more often than not is no longer restricted by the rules of television.

Netflix’s successful series such as Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Stranger Things, and its Marvel series are good examples, while Amazon themselves have invested millions into The Grand Tour. This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that according to a report from Recode, Facebook is looking to develop its own video content as well.

The report says that Facebook is currently in talks with TV studios and video producers about creating all kinds of content for the social media network, such as scripted shows, game shows, sports, and more. These efforts are being led by Ricky Van Veen, the co-founder of College Humor who joined Facebook earlier this year.

According to Van Veen, “Our goal is to kickstart an ecosystem of partner content for the tab, so we’re exploring funding some seed video content, including original and licensed scripted, unscripted, and sports content, that takes advantage of mobile and the social interaction unique to Facebook. Our goal is to show people what is possible on the platform and learn as we continue to work with video partners around the world.”
