Game of Thrones is without a doubt one of the most popular TV shows. HBO is gearing up to premiere the seventh season of this hit show in July. There’s a lot of anticipation among fans across the globe, which number in the tens of millions. There were rumors that the eighth and final season of the show is shorter than all previous seasons, and a new report confirms that this is going to be the case.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the Game of Thrones season 8 episodes will only be six in total, this means that the final season is also going to be the shortest season ever for Game of Thrones.

It hears from sources that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss always planned to cap the show at 73 total episodes. They are now said to be writing the final episodes that will make up the eighth season alongside finishing post-production work on the upcoming seventh season.

The franchise isn’t going to end with the eighth season, though. HBO is believed to be developing as many as five Game of Thrones prequel ideas with different writing teams to take the franchise forward. However, it doesn’t mean that HBO will greenlight any one or all of the prequel ideas.

HBO released the first official Game of Thrones season 7 trailer earlier this week. The upcoming season premieres July 16th.
