It has been a while since Microsoft came out with a new Windows-powered smartphone. Its market share has already shrunk to under 1 percent and there’s no clear plan that Microsoft has shared publicly which gives us its vision for Windows 10 Mobile. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has made some interesting comments in a podcast, he mentioned that the kind of smartphones that Microsoft is going to make in the future will be different from the kind of smartphones you’re used to right now.

Acknowledging that Microsoft has OEM partners like HP that are making Windows-powered smartphones, he said that the company has been focusing more on management and security as well as Continuum, which basically enables a Windows smartphone to double as a desktop.

Nadella mentions that Microsoft is more focused on bringing its apps and services to competing platforms like iOS and Android right now. He adds that the company’s Surface lineup is proof enough that Microsoft can push the envelope when it comes to hardware so it’s not like it lacks skill.

“So when you say ‘when will we make more phones’ I’m sure we’ll make more phones,” Nadella said, adding that “But they may not look like phones that are there today.”

You can see that he’s dropping some very subtle hints about the company’s smartphone plans in this podcast but there’s not much to go on right now. We’ll have to wait a while to get an idea of what kind of smartphone Microsoft is cooking up over at Redmond.
