It has never been possible to expand an iPhone’s storage. Ever since the handset was announced in 2007, Apple has denied customers the ability to externally expand the handset’s memory via a microSD card. That’s one of the big reasons why space is such a precious resource on an iOS device. Fortunately, iOS 11 comes with a new feature which will help users extract more longevity out of their device’s internal storage.

iOS 11 comes with a new feature called Offload Unused Apps. What this feature does is that it automatically deleted unused applications to free up space. However, it keeps the app’s files and settings so that users can pick up where they left off if they ever want to use that app again.

The apps that are deleted by this feature will appear as greyed-out icons on the homescreen. They can easily be reinstalled on the device with a tap. This feature works automatically in the background when it’s activated but it will also enable users to manually offload apps that they no longer require.

This feature is going to go a long way to make sure that users get the best possible use out of their device’s storage. iOS 11 is going to be released for compatible devices in the fall, these devices will sadly not be updated to iOS 11.
