Apple has made a lot of changes to iOS 11 so that the iPad can function as more of a desktop computer. Productivity-focused changes for the iPad include a new file system, a dock for apps, and drag and drop. However, not all of these features will be exclusive to the iPad only after iOS 11 is released. iOS 11 is also going to bring drag and drop support to the iPhone.
According to the developers attending the Worldwide Developers Conference 2017, Apple has told them that the drag and drop feature on iPhone is only going to work within apps. It appears that the company won’t be allowing users to drag and drop files between apps just yet.
Users will be able to drag and drop in iOS 11 but “spring loading” is not supported. That’s a macOS feature where the user drags a file and hovers it over a folder and it opens on its own.
The feature is certainly going to come in handy with the new Files app on iOS 11. The app is meant to make it easier for users to organize the files on their iOS device and those stored in the cloud, it offers integration with cloud storage services like Dropbox.
Do keep in mind that iOS 11 is in beta right now and there’s no guarantee that this feature will make the final cut. It’s up to Apple to decide which features will make the cut when iOS 11 is released later this year in the fall.
