Samsung’s existing flagship chipset, the Exynos 8895, has an integrated Cat.16 LTE modem which has support for download speeds of up to 1Gbps. Not content with those numbers, Samsung worked closely with Japanese telecommunication measuring instrument provider Anritsu to hit download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps with its new Cat.18 LTE modem which is the industry’s first mobile modem to feature 6CA support. What this means is that devices with this modem will be able to support download speeds faster than a conventional home fiber connection.

Samsung’s new 6CA modem offers support for theoretical download speeds of 1.2Gbps. That’s enough to download a full-length HD movie in just 10 seconds. It will also enable buffer-less video calls and mobile live-broadcasting.

The carrier aggregation support improves data transfer rates and network performance. Since Samsung has increased the aggregation capability from five bandwidths to six, the new LTE modem can offer faster yet more stable data transfers.

It also supports 4×4 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and higher-order 256 QAM (Quadrature amplitude modulation) scheme for maximum data transfer rates.

Samsung’s new Cat.18 6CA-supported LTE modem will be integrated with the company’s mobile processors which are due to enter mass production by the end of this year. There’s a very good chance that the Galaxy S9 might be the first smartphone to feature this new LTE modem.
