Word has it that the fruity company Cupertino has flexed their financial muscle by picking up 12 petabytes of data storage from Isilon Systems. This new hardware for Apple (and bringing a windfall to Isilon in the process) will see their days out as a place to store video for iTunes, and since this is still making its rounds through the rumor mills at the moment, it remains to be seen whether all 12 petabytes will be used in conjunction with Apple’s new data center, or does Apple has other plans for their iTunes service? Just to get an idea on how much data that’s worth, a petabyte is equivalent to 1024TB. Currently, consumer hard drives tend to max out at 3TB these days so that you have a better idea of Apple’s undertaking. Let’s hope they’re power efficient as well, since using all that might just sip more juice than you’d bargain for.
