There were initial whispers of introducing cell phone coverage throughout the entire London Underground by the time the 2012 summer Olympics roll around, but it seems as though those fine intentions will have to be squashed simply because the Tube’s antiquated network of narrow tunnels have proved to be too much of a challenge to connect in time. All four of Britain’s operators have actually been working with Chinese telecoms provider Huawei and others in order to extend coverage, but it seems that the narrow, low and more often than not, hot nature of the tunnels alongside a glaring lack of space at stations would mean this idea has to be thrown out of the window, not to mention the cost factor that it will cost approximately 10 times more to put an antenna on the tube than it will be to put one in a building.
