Piecing together the pieces of a puzzle at a crime scene is never easy, especially when the mastermind is as brilliant as Professor Moriarty. Well, we all know from TV that most crimes can be solved in just an hour (commercials included) thanks to the exploits of the heroes at CSI, regardless of whether they are in Miami, New York or Las Vegas. Dutch researchers might have come up with a tool that might turn crime scene investigation into a desk job, thanks to the clever implementation of augmented reality (AR). Currently available just as a prototype, this specially designed pair of AR goggles was designed by the Delft University of Technology, and will rely on two head-mounted cameras and a portable laptop rig so that investigators themselves can reconstruct a virtual crime scene from scratch through the tagging of evidence, in addition to placing objects which they are viewing at the right location. Once the entire area is mapped, other law enforcement personnel are able to check out the investigator’s work and ask for more information if required.
