map-foodWhile restaurant reviews and ratings might be a good indication of whether you should visit a particular establishment, sometimes there are patrons to restaurants who would rather tweet their experience rather than write a review on Yelp or Foursquare, and if you’ve always wanted to know which restaurants to avoid if you want to save yourself a trip to the doctor’s following a bout of food poisoning, the nEmesis system could be something worth taking a look into.

Developed by a group of researchers at the University of Rochester, basically what the nEmesis system does is that it searches for tweets that could have possibly been made by restaurant goers who have suffered from a foodborne illness. From there it attempts to map out restaurants that they might have gone to show you which particular place you should avoid, especially if you were thinking of going. It’s a pretty interesting system and according to the researchers, they have found a valid correlation between their nEmesis system and official data from the US Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

If you’d like to read more about their findings, hit up the University of Rochester’s website for the details.
