sharp-zeta-sh-01g-3In 2014 we are starting to see more smartphones come with a QHD display. Granted it was in 2013 that such devices were launched, but as far as big name OEMs are concerned, both LG and Samsung have launched QHD devices of their own in the form of the LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 respectively.

There are still many OEMs out there who have yet to release QHD devices, but that being said, could 4K display technology for smartphones already be in the works? Well according to the rumor mill, it seems that Sharp is said to be working on a 4K display panel (4,096 x 2,150) that could ultimately make their way into smartphones in 2016.

This is apparently due to the demand from China where is seems that higher-resolution displays are highly-desired. The 4K panels are said to be sized for phones with displays ranging from 5.5-inches to 6-inches. If one were to squeeze that resolution into a 5.5-inch display, we would be looking at a pixel density of 842ppi, which safe to say is pretty sharp! No pun intended.

While 4K displays do seem like the natural progression, it does seem a bit quick considering that QHD displays have yet to become the accepted standard for smartphones. Then there are also battery implications as we’d hate to think how much juice will be required to power such a display, but what do you guys think?
