facebook-unfollowWe have said this many times before, but you have to be careful when posting on social media as it could get you in trouble. For example we have heard of how some people lost their jobs and even cost them a pretty penny for posting something inappropriate on Facebook. However all of that seems to be rather mild when you consider what happens when inmates in prison post on social media.

According to a recent discovery made by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (via The Verge), it seems that inmates who have been caught posting on Facebook using contraband phones have been sentenced to solitary confinement. These sentences are not just for days or weeks, but rather these sentences are in years!

For example one prisoner managed to get sentenced to solitary confinement to the equivalent of 37 years, the equivalent of 74 years of lost visitation rights, and all of this for a total of 38 Facebook posts, although to be fair some of the sentences had to be suspended due to lack of space, and also because some inmates have shorter prison sentences than the punishment itself.

So why so harsh? Apparently how this works is that for every day that an inmate posts on social media, it requires a different count, with each count registering as the highest possible level of offense. For example two weeks worth of posting would get the inmate as many as 14 different counts. We have to admit it does seem to be rather harsh but what do you guys think?
