sony smarteyeglassSo there was a rumor that Apple could be working on an electric car which would undoubtedly propel the Cupertino company into a brand new industry if it is true, but are there are other industries that Apple could be eyeing? We suppose potentially there could be, and according to a report from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, he claims that the other industry Apple is looking into could be the augmented reality industry.

Munster claims that he has heard from his sources that at the moment, Apple is said to be fielding a small team that is experimenting with augmented reality technology as they believe that it could be the next evolution in terms of computing. Munster also speculates that this could be transformative towards the tech industry along the lines of the smartphone.

However it is unclear as to how Apple plans to implement augmented reality technology. Could we simply be looking at a piece of software that would utilize the camera on your iOS device? This would not really come as a surprise since there have been various patents granted to Apple in the past. Or could we be looking at Apple creating their own hardware like what Sony did with the SmartEyeglass?

However Munster suspects it might be the latter, especially with the string of hires Apple has made for executives from various luxury fashion companies. Of course it remains to be seen if Munster’s report will pan out, but in the meantime what do you guys think of Apple trying their hand at augmented reality systems?
