Video creators can easily add clickable text to their videos on YouTube using annotations. This allows them to redirect their viewers to other videos, provide additional information or simply increase engagement. It’s a handy feature that is now being replaced. YouTube announced today that it is going to replace annotations with cards, it says that we can “think of cards like an evolution of annotations”

The core idea behind the feature remains the same. Video creators will be able to offer more information, connect with their views and link to other videos like before. However cards will bring the user interface in line with what the company has on some of its other products like Google Now.

Six types of cards are available initially though the new “Cards” tab in the Video Editor. These include Merchandising, Fundraising, Video, Playlist, Associated Website and Fan Funding. Cards can be created and edited at any time.

Video creators also get more flexibility with cards since they will work across mobile and desktop. YouTube says that its goal is to eventually replace annotations completely. It will wait until cards “can do everything annotations can do today, and more.”

YouTube encourages users to provide it with feedback on cards and how they would like to see it be improved in the future.
