facebook logoWhen you are a company the size of Facebook, and in the industry in which they are in, having a data center that is reliable would be on the top of their list of priorities – at least one of them. A data center does require a fair amount of juice to run, that is for sure, and Facebook are constructing a brand new data center over in Fort Worth, Texas, which will eventually fully run on renewable energy, now how about that?

It is said that the social network company will invest a minimum of $500 million in the 110-acre site, and it is tipped to come online some time late next year. This latest location will be the fifth data center by Facebook, which means it will have the company of “older siblings” over in Altoona, Iowa; Prineville, Oregon; Forest City, North Carolina; and Luleå, Sweden. The equipment within the upcoming data center will be based on the most recent in Facebook’s Open Compute Project data-center hardware designs.

In terms of sustainability, the Fort Worth data center will rely on outdoor air to keep it cool rather than taking the traditional route of air conditioners, and it is said that a new, 200-megawatt wind project that is being developed at the moment will be able to generate the massive amounts of juice to keep this data center going.
