google hurricaneHurricane season is upon us and in an effort to help keep its users informed, Google has announced some changes that they will be making to its search results. Basically if you’re going to be searching for news about hurricanes or tornados, Google’s search results will now display maps showing you where these hurricanes or tornados are.

This includes showing you a map of where your location is in relation to the oncoming storm, visualizations of its forecasted track, wind speed, arrival time, courtesy of NOAA, and it will also provide users with instructions on how to prepare and stay safe, all of which will be based on the intensity of the storm and its arrival time relative to where you are.

So for example if a storm is about a week away, your instructions should be less urgent compared to if it were a few hours away, and so on. According to Google, “We want to be as prepared and as helpful as possible for the next one—no matter where it hits, or how big it is. So we’re always working to improve our Crisis Response efforts to help people stay safe and informed during these events.”

This feature should already be live so if you’re curious and want to take the new feature for a spin or to get accustomed to it, just fire up your Google search and you should be good to go.
