There’s no shortage of opinion on drones and how they can be used to infringe on someone’s privacy, some people are seriously considered with just how easy it is becoming for anyone to get a drone that ammunition companies have felt the need to create ammo designed for the purpose of shooting down drones. Ohio-based Battelle has come up with another solution for disrupting drones mid-air, called DroneDefender, it uses radio waves to eliminate these airborne threats safely.

Battelle DroneDefender makes use of radio control frequency disruption to knock drones offline in the air before they can pose any threat to civilian or military safety. It’s an easy to use, lightweight, inexpensive point-and-shoot system that has a demonstrated range of 400 meters. It quickly disrupts the drone so the operator can’t take any remote action, like snapping pictures or in the absolute worst case scenario, detonate an IED.

The project’s technical director Alex Morrow says that “It can help us in numerous settings, from the White House lawn to bases and embassies overseas; from prisons and schools to historic sites.” DroneDefender has a cold start time of <0.1 seconds and can operate continuously for five hours, it weighs under ten pounds depending on how it has been configured. It can either be fixed or portable with additional battery packs available to protect any kind of installation.

What is basically does is emit a blast of electromagnetic energy that’s tuned to the most commonly used ISM and GPS frequencies which disable the drone so that it can no longer receive further commands from the operator. It won’t knock it straight out of the sky like Boeing’s solution can, but nevertheless it provides a decent level of protection against such threats.
