DELL-Venue-10-7000-04We all use our laptops differently. Some of us might be professionals and do a lot of photo or video editing, coding, sound mixing, and so on. Some of us might use it for productivity, like typing up documents, making spreadsheets, presentations, and so on. Some of us might be really light users and just use it to surf the web, watch videos, and listen to music.

However your computer’s battery can’t tell what kind of user you are, but that’s something Microsoft wants to look into. The Redmond company has recently started to research the idea of laptop batteries that can adjust itself depending on how you use the laptop. Ultimately this could lead to laptops that can last longer than it normally does simply based on your usage habits.

According to the team, “It combines several different kinds of batteries, all of which are optimized for different tasks, into the same computer. Then, it works with the operating system to figure out whether the user is, say, looking at Word documents or editing video footage, and applies the most efficient battery for that task.”

So far they have successfully managed to build working prototypes of their battery concept. They are expected to present their findings at the ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles later this week.
