Microsoft has officially announced a new testing phase for an ad-supported tier of Xbox Cloud Gaming, offering players free access to stream select titles in exchange for viewing advertisements.

This move follows other recent platform developments, including expanded backward compatibility for older Xbox titles on PC, and aims to broaden accessibility for gamers who prefer not to pay for a subscription.

Under this proposed model, players can access games from the cloud library without an active Game Pass membership. However, gaining and maintaining gameplay access requires viewing a set duration of advertisements both before initiating a gaming session and at periodic intervals during gameplay. Microsoft has noted that for every hour played, users must watch a predefined amount of ad content. The company has not yet detailed the exact frequency or duration of these commercial breaks.

Despite the addition of advertisements, Microsoft emphasized that the core gameplay experience will remain unchanged. Players retain the flexibility to transition to paid, ad-free subscription tiers or purchase games outright at any time.

For corporate partners, Microsoft outlined five core guidelines governing advertisement placement on the platform. Campaigns must deliver clear value to the player, avoid disrupting active gameplay, preserve overall game quality, maintain transparency regarding commercial intent, and align content with audience expectations across different platforms.

The public testing phase for this ad-supported cloud model launches today, exclusively available to active members of the Xbox Insider program. Registered insiders can join the trial by following enrollment instructions provided on Microsoft’s official support page.
