firefox_logo_newEver since Microsoft introduced 64-bit Windows, various softwares have been updated to include 64-bit versions as well, or at the very least users are being offered either 32-bit or 64-bit versions of the software. Interestingly enough Mozilla’s Firefox has remained 32-bit for the longest time ever, but not anymore.

The folks at Mozilla have recently announced that the 64-bit version of its Firefox browser for the Windows operating system is now available for download. According to Mozilla, “Today we are releasing Firefox 64-bit for Windows to offer gains in performance for users with 64-bit systems. We’re pleased to offer it to users of Windows 7 and above looking for added performance for applications and games.”

However Mozilla notes that the 64-bit version of Firefox will have limited support for plugins and this is by design. This means that some sites that require plugins that worked in the 32-bit version of Firefox will not work or display properly, so that’s something to take note of if you are planning to use the 64-bit version of the browser.

If this sounds like something you would love to upgrade to, then be sure to head on over to Mozilla’s download page, select your language and go ahead and download it. With the upgrade to 64-bit for Windows, it looks like Apple’s OS X platform is the only platform left that does not have a 64-bit version of Firefox.
